In March of the year 1999, Yuu Yuu Hakusho or as it is popularly known around here as Ghostfighter began its second run on Philippine television broadcast. It became a hit among young viewers despite that it was not a prime time show. Its schedule on GMA however was a prime time slot: Weekdays at 7 PM. I believe this shrewd planning is the direct cause of why there is a such fervor for anime in the Philippines right now.
Yuu Yuu Hakusho aka Ghostfighter is not the first anime to be shown in the Philippines. That is hardly the case. Other animes have made noticeable marks first; especially, Voltes V which used to be shown on IBC. Dragon Ball was also shown regularly on RPN 9 as well as Saint Tail by the same broadcaster. Sailormoon is also shown by ABC. There also abound many series, which I refer to as morning anime. Anime versions of Cinderella and the Little Mermaid come to mind. In early afternoons, there was the Jungle Book and Kimba to watch. However, it was GMA who began actively promoting anime by broadcasting Yuu Yuu Hakusho/ Ghostfigter every weekday at 7 in the evening.

STORY
It all started when a delinquent 14-year-old boy named Yusuke Urameshi died in a car accident who tried to save a young boy's life. His spirit roamed around for a while and he decided to take a peek on his house to see what's going on after his death. Surprisingly, most people who went to his burial seem to be laughing. Most of them were Yusuke's enemies from school and his teachers who hated him, except the school's dean. The dean went to Yusuke's burial and mourned which also surprised Yusuke because he used to get scolded by him often. Atsuko and Keiko also mourned for him. Kuwabara came to his burrial with his blood boiling. His friends were already holding him back. Kuwabara still kept saying that he and Yusuke still have a score to settle. He said this with tears. Yusuke realized that there are still people out there who cared for him.

The main part of Yuu Yuu Hakusho is devoted to the Ankoku Bujutsukai or Dark Martial Arts Tournament. At least fifty episodes focus on this tournament. There are a LOT of characters in this section so I'll group them by the teams they fit into. We never even get to see two of the teams compete, Gokukairoku Kyou and Kydousentai who don't make it past their first fight.
